Interior of Santa Maria Novella, a Dominican monastery in Florence, Italy, 1297-1350
The Dominicans were typically considered the more learned and educated of the monastic orders. This is one of two large Dominican structures in Florence (which was unusual - normally just one large structure per monastic order was located in a city). This is a typically Italian building, with lots of frescos. However, it strongly rooted in gothic architecture, minus all the bells and whistles - the monastic orders are the reason that there is gothic architecture in Italy in general. They acted as missionaries for the gothic style, and spread it all over Europe during this time period, combining it with more regional forms of architecture as they started monasteries.
